Population, Health, and Economic Development
PRB and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation have established two new programs to study the role of population and reproductive health in economic development with a specific focus on sub-Saharan Africa. These programs, Dissertation Fellowships and Teams of Research Excellence, were launched in 2006 to support innovative, policy-relevant research on how population and reproductive health affect development, including economic growth, poverty reduction, and equity. The fellows and research teams will form a nucleus of research activity and will participate in PRB and Hewlett-sponsored research conferences, methods workshops, and other outreach. The initiatives aim to produce a growing body of sound evidence to be incorporated into national economic planning and decision-making. Grants are planned for 2006, 2007, and 2008. The programs were launched at the First Annual Hewlett/PRB Research Conference on Population Impacts on Economic Development in London in 2006.
