(Washington, DC) -- James (Jay) Gribble, senior program director for population and reproductive health at the Population Reference Bureau, has been named vice president of International Programs, effective Nov. 24, 2008.
"Jay brings a deep and varied background in research and policy communication in areas central to PRB's international programs," says William Butz, PRB's president. "His leadership at PRB and in the wider community will help accelerate progress in meeting the world’s population, health, and environmental challenges."
Before joining PRB in August 2007, Gribble was a senior scientist with the Futures Group and managed reproductive health policy-related work in Latin America and other parts of the world. He previously worked as director of behavioral and operations research at the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University.
He has published many scientific articles on different aspects of family planning and reproductive health services and policies, and on factors that affect people’s responses when participating in surveys. He is interested in biomedical ethics and served for over a decade as the chair of the institutional review board at the Whitman Walker Clinic, in Washington, D.C.
Gribble completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin in marketing and Spanish. He holds a Doctor of Science in demography from Harvard University.
"PRB's strength is making information about population, global health, and environment issues relevant and understandable to policy audiences and the public," says Gribble. "With a track record of almost 80 years, PRB continues to have a vital role to play in improving the quality of people's lives around the world. I look forward to working with PRB staff, as well as our partner organizations and colleagues in carrying out our mission."
The International Programs Department at PRB has 20 staff and its programs and publications reach policymakers, educators, and journalists. PRB's core themes are reflected in the work of these dedicated and skilled professionals: fertility and reproductive health, global health, population and environment, gender, aging, immigration and urbanization, poverty and inequality, and children and families. Notable among the dozens of activities that keep the staff traveling and working around the world are conducting regional policy communications workshops for researchers, technical experts, and advocates; and building cross-sectoral population, health, and environment programs.
The Population Reference Bureau informs people around the world about population, health, and the environment, and empowers them to use that information to advance the well-being of current and future generations.
