An Update on Effective Approaches for Gender-Integrated Interventions for Reproductive Health

This publication extends two prior reviews—So What? (2004) and New Evidence (2009)—of evidence for gender-integrated interventions.

Reviewers summarized the evidence, published from 2009 to 2016, for reproductive health interventions that promoted behaviors related to unintended pregnancy, maternal health, human HIV/AIDS, and other sexually transmitted infections, gender-based violence, and menstrual hygiene management.

Reviewers used the Gender-Integration Continuum Tool as a framework for evaluating approaches to address gender within moderate-to-rigorous evaluation designs. The authors found evidence of positive effects for group and community interventions and make the case for addressing gender dynamics and engaging groups and communities to modify harmful gender norms, although they note gaps in the evidence remain.
