Training and Support for Journalists

PRB trains, supports, and collaborates with journalists and media organizations to produce evidence-based news coverage of health and population topics. Our media programs have been a pillar of our work for 30 years.

Through global, regional, and national programs, we build the capacity of individual journalists and youth advocates to understand and interpret information about intersections of climate, gender, diseases and pandemics, health misinformation, social drivers of health behaviors, and more. We give journalists the opportunities, connections to sites and sources, and tools and skills to gather and report information that best aligns with the needs of their communities.

We work with journalists over time to enhance their information-gathering and data literacy so they can spark public dialogue with thoroughly reported news coverage. We provide sensitization training on interviewing sources and communicating sensitive subject matter in a way that neutralizes stigma and harm. Our media programs include individuals at all stages of their careers, from youth in practicum at local radio stations to seasoned editors leading established newsrooms.

PRB’s respect for journalistic independence and ethics is central to our approach. Our media programming aims to strengthen journalists’ skills and ability to cover health stories, not direct what they cover. Participating journalists retain editorial control over what topics they cover and how to write about them. We believe that a free press is an essential democratic institution and public information made available through objective journalism is critical for accountability and change.

Our signature journalism training program, Women’s Edition, has supported hundreds of senior-level women editors, reporters, and producers from influential media organizations to examine and report on pressing issues affecting women’s health and roles in society.

Our media programs include:

  • Fellowship programs that allow journalists to gain specialized knowledge about health and development topics, grow their roster of expert sources, receive grants for reporting, and build peer relationships and collaborative news projects.
  • Radio and podcast training that provides both technical guidance in audio production and sound editing, and information about relevant health topics in the form of data, tip sheets, or investigative reporting mentorship.
  • Multimedia and mobile technology training that teaches youth-led organizations and advocates to produce engaging and socially responsible information for online dissemination using a variety of technologies and platforms. We include comprehensive training around advocacy goalsetting and evidence-based communication.
  • Timely and topic-specific workshops that bring journalists together with national and regional experts and deliver credible data and information to diverse media.
  • Tools and resources that give journalists key facts and leads for their reporting.
